The things that pull me away from God represent my false self and when I reflect on these things I have discovered that they are all about me (self).
These things all fall into one of three areas: 1. What I own 2. What others think of me 3. What I do
What helps me feel closer to God is asking Him to show me these things. My Lord has a wonderful way of gently and lovingly answering that prayer. There is no condemnation, just love and acceptance. This has helped me to become more aware of God’s presence and love for me.
I like Psalm 139:23-24: 23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
It seems that man always needs to create a religion and set his own rules and boundaries. The Truth of God doesn't seem to satisfy, especially in man's lust for power and control. We've always got to tinker and produce a doctrine to burden one another. A great deal of Christian tradition and doctrine causes us to be bound and prevents us from being set free. It causes hard-heartedness to the things of God, and spiritual dyslexia when we read the scripture. I can only get close to God by getting a revelation of the truth of His unconditional Love and Grace.
